Sometimes, even the manga world can be full of surprises, and not always the good kinds. There was this one time when Eiichiro Oda, the man, the myth, the legend behind theOne Pieceseries, found himself in a sticky situation after one of his comments in a past interview!

Apparently, he showed heartfelt support for a fellow mangaka who’s confessed to having a pretty disturbing s*x fetish! Of course, it raised a lot of eyebrows and also sparked a heated debate among fans and critics.
Even to this day, it makes fans wonder what Oda was actually thinking and if he genuinely had no idea about this incident, which is very unlikely, however.

In case you don’t know, there was a past interview of Eiichiro Oda from 2021, which caused quite a stir amongOne Piecefans. In fact, for any die-hard Oda fan, this piece of info can be pretty hard to digest.
During the interview, at one point,Oda fondly mentioned his past mentor Nobuhiro Watsuki, who is also the creator of Rurouni Kenshin, and claimed that he had played a big role in his early career.

I worked under him 4 months. Maybe it was the happiest moment in my entire life.
Oda also reminisced about his old days with Watsuki, commenting that it was perhaps the happiest period of his life, a four-month duration working directly under him. He also said how amazing of a person Watsuki really is in his eyes.

Oda (2021): Watsuki-sensei is an amazing person. The relationship between him and me is like comrades rather than just master and apprentice. I worked under him 4 months. Maybe it was the happiest moment in my entire life.🥰pic.twitter.com/5Yfdia7HJm
Watsuki further responded with equally high praise from himself! When Oda showed the first chapter ofOne Piece, his first impression was simply mind-blowing, and he was sure the series would be a hit.

Such mutual respect and admiration between these two mangakas may look pretty amazing on the surface, but who could’ve thoughtthere could be a dark reality behind it?
One Piecefans are genuinely concerned after Oda’s comment on Watsuki-san!
In 2018, manga artistNobuhiro Watsuki was caught holding child p*rnography, which featured naked girls aged 15 or younger! The Japanese entertainment industry immediately condemned him, and his popular manga,Rurouni Kenshin’supcomingHokkaido Arcwas put on hiatus.
The scandal also led to the cancellation of TV broadcasts of the live-action “Kenshin” movies. So naturally, this news has had lasting repercussions, with many fans still reeling from the shock. (Source:JapanToday)
“Color me devastated. I really liked that manga too”: Eiichiro Oda Should’ve Listened to Fans Before Involving Himself in the Rurouni Kenshin Controversy
And now with what Oda said about Watsuki, knowing the interview took place after the incident, has putOne Piecefans in a rage. People were absolutely uncomfortable and disgusted as they clearly found Oda’s opinion “unacceptable.” Should Oda really be sentenced guilty for maintaining a good relationship with Watsuki-san?
We cancelling Oda now?
Despite the backlash on forums, it is unlikely that Oda will suffer serious consequences. Shonen Jump is still backing Watsuki, and Liden Films is once again reviving theRurouni Kenshinanime!
