While manyOne Piecefans won’t agree with it, the Skypiea arc in the series is one of the most important and entertaining arcs of the series. Not only did the arc give one of the best villains ofOne Piece, but it also uncovered a lot of references that later became crucial to the story. Still, some fans feel the need to skip the arc and don’t understand its importance.

Skypiea Arc

Many fans believe that the arc is just a filler arc and is used for plot direction but does not hold any significance in the storyline ofOne Piece. Because of this, some fans skipped the arc entirely, leaving a big hole in the story, which held a big reference in the later part of the story, such as the Gear 5 transformation.

Eiichiro Oda, the creator ofOne Piece, knew the importance of the Skypiea arc, and he decided to makeOne Piecefans who skipped the arc entirely pay the price during the Wano arc, especially when Luffy attained the Gear 5 transformation. The transformation and the arc in general had a lot of Skypiea references that fans who skipped missed entirely.

Why do Fans Skip Skypiea Arc inOne Piece?

The Skypiea Arc, which runs from episodes 153 to 195, is 43 episodes that continue where the Jaya Arc left off. It follows Luffy and his group as they explore the island of Skypiea and battle the lightning-wielding “God” Enel. Over the years, the Straw Hats adventure in Skypiea has received a lot of unfair criticism.

Given that the Straw Hat crew goes above and beyond to reach the island above the clouds, manyOne Piecefans believed that the journey on Skypiea was essentially a side mission. This gave rise to the notion that going to the island merely serves as a means of disorientation and that it does not, in fact, forward the plot of the series.

But after the Wano arc, many fans changed their mindset about Skypiea, as the Wano arc had some references or parallels with the Skypiea arc that were missed by fans who skipped Skypiea. This led to fans regretting their decision.

Skypiea Parallels During Gear 5 Transformation

Eiichiro Odamade theOne Piecefans who skipped Skypiea pay the price in his way. He introduced some parallels in the story that was a link between Skypiea and Wano, which many fans could not understand, thus being completely clueless. These parallels made them understand the importance held by the Skypiea arc.

Many of them were during the Gear 5 transformation. The first is, when Luffy uses gear 5 mode for the first time, he jumps in the sky and forms the pose of Nika, which was first shown in the Skypiea arc when the straw hats were dancing around the fire. Another one was Luffy’s laugh, which was also a reference to the Skypiea arc.

Oda even foreshadowed the moment when Luffy uses the Gear 5 technique to turn everything around him into rubber. This was first hinted at in Skypiea when Luffy jumped on the clouds for the first time. Also, Luffy’s shadow in the clouds when he changed into gear 5 was foreshadowed during the Skypiea arc. Oda planted some of the biggest parallels between Skypiea and Wano, which were enjoyed by the fans who watched Skypiea and went over the heads ofOne Piecefans who ignored it.
