In 2022, Oda andDetective Conan‘s Gosho Aoyama were interviewed at the Over 100 Miracle Talk and it was translated by@WSJ_manga. During the interview, Oda talked about how he felt whenOne Piecelost its humor and became a serious story because of the upcoming final war. He explained how he hated doing that and is now ready to go back to his old ways.

Oda stated:

Battle manga has to keep getting more and more serious to keep up with readers’ expectations and I honestly hate that. I definitely don’t want my work to become a serious manga like that. I want and have decided to have fun, and I feel like I’m finally able to do that. When I was drawing this, I actually had fun.

Oda knew that he had to bring comedy back toOne Pieceand the perfect moment for it waswhen he introduced Gear 5 in Wano. He pointed out that he had fun while drawing it and he will continue on the same path.
