The 30th anniversary should be a grand celebration for any series. Although, the same can’t be said aboutRurouni Kenshin, given its creator’s controversial track record. A few years back, Nobuhiro Watsuki landed himself in some serious controversies. His actions were severe enough to have charges placed against him.

With a recent development, many renowned mangaka including Eiichiro Oda and Masashi Kishimoto are at the brunt of severe backlash for associating with Watsuki. Their association could be labeled as a mere obligatory gesture, but that doesn’t seem to be the case entirely.

Nobuhiro Watsuki was convicted of the possession of child pornography in 2018. The repercussions he faced included a fine of$ 1500approximately and a brief hiatus on the serialization of the Hokkaido Arc ofRurouni Kenshin. Everyone is questioning whether it was something these mangaka chose to do or if it was a professional obligation they had to fulfill.

It seems to be a mix of both but more of the former because of the absence of some notable names.Tite Kubo,Koyoharu Gotouge, andTatsuki Fujimotohave all been published in Jump Magazines, yet it seems like they won’t be doing the colored illustrations. Their absence from the list makes it seem like others could have opted out as well but simply didn’t care enough to do so.

They could have separated the art and the artist, and the colored illustration might simply be a token of respect forRurouni Kenshinand not Watsuki. However, it’s hard to make that distinction in the anime-manga community where the works are synonymous to their creator’s name and vice versa.
