Dragon’s Dogma 2is shaping up to be one of the most divisive games of the year so far. While Capcom has gotten a lot of player’s hackles up with its questionable choices for puttingmicrotransactions in its single-player game— a perfectly reasonable criticis — the Arisen faithful are delighting in the game’s fluid combat and vast, intricate world (just ask our Jeff Brooks, orcheck out his review in progress).
But recently, players have been starting to catch onto a trend that’s taken over the game, and it’s a trend that the players, and not Capcom, have created — almost all the recruitable Pawns you’re able to acquire from The Rift are women. What’s more, the pawns seem to be aware of this.

Just like in the firstDragon’s Dogma, in Dragon’s Dogma 2, your Arisen will beaccompanied on their quest by Pawns— AI-controlled NPCs who will join you on your adventures and assist you in battle. Your main Pawn is completely customizable, but you’ll have to fill out the rest of your party by acquiring other Pawns from The Rift, mostly Pawns who were created by other players. In order to acquire more powerful Pawns for your party, you’llneed to spend Pawn Badges at Riftsones(unless you’replaying with a friend’s Pawn— then it’s free), and one of the easiest ways to acquire these badges is to have other players recruit your main Pawn to bring along on their journeys.
When searching for other player-created pawns, players have been reporting that an overwhelming number of the ones available are women. While that might at first glance seem empowering, some players think there may be… other reasons at hand. “To be fair, pawn population is like 90% female,” said Reddit user GameConsideration. “I mean, I get why… but still.”

Despite some pre-release concerns aboutthe quality of Pawn AI in combat, the Pawns seem programmed to be a lot smarter and self-aware than the average NPC. Not only will visitor Pawns make comments specific to the Arisen characters, such as how they perform in combat or their level of efficency in finding treasure chests, but if all your pawns are women, some players have noted that they will talk to each other about it, whether they’re talking about you or their “previous master.” Said Reddit user Izanagi553, “sometimes my pawns will go ‘You know this isn’t particularly relevant but all of us are women. Curious.’ and I’m over here like ‘I CAN EXPLAIN’ and then one of the others goes ‘I don’t see a problem with it.’

There’s knowing your audience, and there’sknowingyour audience. While the Pawns may be quick to call you out on your in-game lifestyle choices (note: they seem to do this if you only recruit male Pawns too, but they’re harder to come by), Capcom seems to have been predicting this pattern before it even began.
Some of the Linkstones in the game will act as filters, allowing you to only summon Pawns from a list of specific characteristics, such as the Fanged Linkstone, which will only summon Beastren, or the Foothills Linkstone, which specifically summons only male Pawns who are short in stature. Still, there’s one that stands out, the Abundance Linkstone, which one player described as, “Pawns with a ‘distinctive upper half’, aka maxed chest slider females.” Said Reddit user Taliesin_, “The abundance one actually got a guffaw out of me when I found it.
