Ma Dong-seok’sEternalsmight not have made as big a splash as Marvel expected, but the blame for this does not lie with the South Korean actor. TheTrain to Busanstar has been making it big with his Netflix films, the latest of which has taken the streaming giant by storm in no less than 82 countries.

Badland Huntersis the sequel to 2023’sConcrete Utopia, set in the same earthquake-ravaged Seoul, populated by bandits and malicious mutants. The film was released on January 26th, 2024, and managed to become the most-watched non-English content for the streamer in the week of January 22 to January 26.
Badland Huntershas charted in 82 countries
Badland Huntershas charted as one of the films in the Top 10, in 82 countries globally. The total viewership of the film according to stats revealed byNetflix, is approximately 14.3 million, putting it in the top 10 charts in just 2 days after its release.
Ma Dong-seok, also known as Don Lee, stars in the film as Nam-san a wasteland hunter who has a bone to pick with the mutants and bandits. The film has garnered a lot of success with mainstream audiences, becoming the second most watched film in the days to follow, right behind the Kevin Hart starter, Lift.

Despite the great viewership of the film, it seems that critics find it lacking, claiming that as a genre effort, the film works perfectly, but it never takes the time to explore the various issues that it sets up or the characters that it creates. Given that this is a direct sequel, this could be expected of the film, which decidedly goes with a shallower approach, which might be a party to the wide audience appeal that it has developed.
Badland Huntersis unique among popular Korean post-apocalypse films
Train to Busan
Don Lee has starred in disaster films before, particularly inTrain to Busan.South Korean post-apocalyptic films usually deal with zombies, and Concrete Utopia breaks the mould. Korean cinema has made its mark in the world with its fantasy and science fiction series.
The film has managed to achieve in two days what a lot of films take weeks to get down on streaming, and with the rising focus on South Korean works, it becomes infinitely more impressive thatBadland Hunterswas able to do what it did.

There was also the fact that big-budget films from Hollywood have taken the back seat, thanks to the months-long SAG AFTRA and Writers’ strikes. This allowed smaller films from foreign languages to break out at the beginning of the year, making it easier for films likeBadland Huntersto work out.
