While theNintendo Switch 2 will be released in just a few days, don’t expect any day-one reviews to surface out of the woodwork. Contrary to past console launches, Nintendo is not letting the press tinker with the upcoming console for a review.

Nintendo has explained this decision, though it’s one that’s a bit confusing. Important to note: I am aware that companies are not required to send any publication any review units, be it for games or consoles. It’s just odd to see this, especially for such a high-profile release.

Nintendo Dismisses Report On Switch 2 Retailer Profit Margins

It’s rare for Nintendo to respond to reports, but it did just that with a recent one concerning retailers.

Why There Are No Day-One Nintendo Switch 2 Reviews Explained

Nintendo has confirmed they are not sending any press review units to anyone ahead of launch, and the explanation given by a company spokesperson (viaVGC) is that “important features and updates” will only be available via a system update on the day of the console’s official release on June 5.

Unless this means the console itself won’t be playable until applying this console update, then this is a head-scratcher. Not only that, but Nintendo could have held events for press, so they can get some ample time with the consoles and have their verdict available at launch.

This also means that Switch 2 games won’t have day-one reviews available as well. Unless someone plans to play and pump out a hastily-made review, I wouldn’t expect reviews for Mario Kart World and the other console launch titles to be available on June 5.

The Nintendo Switch 2 New Backwards Compatibility Roadmap

Nintendo releases a roadmap for Switch 2 backward compatibility issues.

Nintendo could have explained to reviewers how the system they are reviewing doesn’t include the important day-one update that adds more functionality as well.

The biggest issue here is, there are now a ton of questions that will remain unanswered for the Switch 2. How long does its batteryreallylast? Can we expect better durability on the new Joy-Cons? There is so much stuff that will need to be tested before consumers know the real score.

Usage example for the Switch 2’s Mouse Controls

Unfortunately, the Switch 2’s launch syncs up just a day before the year’s biggest gaming event kicks off, which is the Summer Game Fest. Chances are, most publications will be busy covering the reveals, announcements, hands-on previews, and more at the event, which means they will then need to find more time and manpower to cover the Switch 2 while that’s happening.

Of course, this shouldn’t affect Nintendo’s bottom line in any way. Every Switch 2 console sold will be gobbled up within seconds, so they are going to sell out regardless of reviews. Maybe that’s also the reason why? Nintendo isn’t sending press any early Switch 2 review units, simply because they don’tneedto.
