Recently, a leaked trailer forSpider-man The Great Webmade its way to the internet, and fans all over the web are feeling disheartened over the game’s lost potential. After all, Insomniac’s canceled game will likely not see the light of day, and there’s little fans can do about it.

Spider-Man new game

Furthermore, this was rumoured to be a live-service title, featuring several Spider-Man variants. Unfortunately, something about this model (or the game itself) stopped the studio from developing it any further, and we can only wonder why.

Spider-man The Great Web could have been the perfect co-op game for fans

In a post by user TravlsScott on Reddit, the leaked trailer takes the highlight; pointing out all the aspects of the game Insomniac was working on. This was supposedly a game set in the same landscape as earlier games, and instead of being a single-player campaign, it would lead players to co-op with one another.

Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2 Development Team Was Smaller Than You Might Think

Not only does this idea sound exciting on paper, but also looks phenomenal when put to visuals and mechanics. After all, the studio holds a great reputation formaking the best of a revered franchise. There’s also theDeadpoolPTSD with this one since its video-game IP was canceled long ago and never saw a climb to glory.

Moreover, a live-service model for the canceled game could have worked in its favor. This model works best when the studio knows what they’re making, and given the IP’s track record, it’s safe to assume this could have been well-planned.

Fans blame Disney for the mishap

The post has a mix of comments from all sides; some admit this must have been a great decision, and others are still recovering from the lost hopes for a game with so much potential. However, certain thoughts are well inclined with the logic as to why this title was canceled.

Criterion Games Will Join EA Entertainment to Grow Best Franchises

For instance, a comment by user balerion20 makes an assumption:

I got a feeling they cancelled the game because I can’t really imagine the Disney’s royalties for a multiplayer game. This maybe makes the game not very profitable for a multiplayer game ?

Looking at EA’s cancelling Star Wars games, I don’t know…

Spider-Man The Great Web

They aren’t the only ones. Another user who goes by the name of -LastGrail- points the finger at Disney for the same:

Real or not. I imagine Disney is the reason this does not exist. So, much money and licensing would have to be funnelled that there will be no point.Much better for Sony to have their own IP like Helldivers 2 and take all the revenue and profit.

Whether or not Disney’s involvement in all this should be a matter of discussion, the fact remains that live-service games can be a tricky business to get into, and this title would be no different.
