After the success and incredible quality ofArcaneandCastlevania, both anime adaptations of popular video game franchises,Devil May Cryhas some big shoes to fill. But it’s a series that’s up to the challenge.
Will Netflix’sDevil May CryAnime Follow The Story From The Games?
Both the synopsis and the teaser trailer tell us the anime will be an origin story, where Dante’s on his way to becoming the legendary demon hunter everyone knows and loves.
In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game and from the vision of Adi Shankar, sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.
In the video game series, we don’t see much of the human world. What we do see is mostly apocalyptic cities overrun with monsters. But it’s implied that normal cities and societies exist. The teaser for the anime makes it seem like we’ll see more of human society prior to the portal opening and creating so much chaos.
Time-frame wise, the anime seems set closest toDevil May Cry 3, a prequel to the originalDevil May Cryand arguablythe best gamein the series. But I’d temper expectations of a by-the-numbers adaptation and think of it more like theCastlevaniaanime, where the story and characters are their own rather than trying to be like the source material.
