CyberConnect2 fulfills all our expectations withDemon Slayer Hinokami Chronicles

Kimetsu no Yaiba Hinokami Keppuutanwas announced for the first time in March 2020. However, back as far as September 2019, CyberConnect2 and its CEO teased to be working on the adaptation of a “popular shonen manga”. Many were expecting the studio’s fine artists to be working on aDemon Slayergame.

If you haven’t of CyberConnect2 before, besides handling theDot Hackseries among other famous JRPGs, it also made theNaruto Ultimate Ninja Stormgames. Which are all incredible.

CyberConnect2 was by far the best studio for the job of delivering the first-everDemon Slayergame, and it didn’t miss its target. Be it in how it readapts the manga’s iconic moments and its battle system.

Reliving the adventures of Tanjiro and Nezuko

Demon Slayer The Hinokami Chroniclesis divided into two major sections. The Adventure Mode, and the Versus Mode. However, players will all have to go through the Adventure Mode first, at least its prologue, before unlocking Versus Mode.

While this is a great fighting game to pick up in an afternoon between friends, the game also pushes players towards its solo content and reliving the adventures of Tanjiro and Nezuko. As you will unlock Versus mode characters through Adventure Mode.

In the Adventure Mode,Demon Slayer The Hinokami Chronicleslets players control for the most part Tanjiro, as you explore 3D environments. It’s definitely not a full exploration game, but going through each of these stages is refreshing, as Tanjiro can either immediately go toward the main objective, or take several detours to find some side bonuses.

These bonuses include the Kimetsu Points and Memories, used to unlock bonus content, characters, and scenes. The game’s beautiful graphics and the various NPCs you meet, alongside regular voiced interventions from Tanjiro make the stages worthwhile even if they ultimately are quite linear. The core of the game though is the fighting system, as Tanjiro will regularly encounter Demons.

The best of 3D arena battlers

The battle system ofDemon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaibadefinitely needs a little adaptation time during its first hour, but is quite simple once you’re used to it. It’s very, very similar to theNaruto Ultimate Ninja Stormseries. With separate buttons for light, heavy attacks, and Breathing Techniques. Once you’ve memorized the controls, you’ll quickly be able to strike deadly combos as you guard and evade the Demons' attacks.

Demon Slayer Hinokami Chroniclesalso uses a tag battle system. The two characters won’t fight simultaneously but can switch during battle, or even chain combos together. Making battles a truly exhilarating experience as a member of the Demon Slayer Corps.

While there are no difficulty settings in the game, and certain boss battles can be quite hard, there is no penalty for getting a game over. Those who want to aim for the best S rank and unlock everything in the game will have to triumph over bosses without dying once. But if you do get a game over, you can always continue the fight instead of restarting from the beginning.

As for Versus mode, both an online and offline mode are present. You’ll be able to spend hours and hours fighting it out with your friends, using your favorite characters and their Breathing Styles.

Demon Slayer Hinokami Chroniclesis a great first entry with a promising future

WhileDemon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba The HInokami Chroniclesis a great game for fans of the manga or newcomers, there is definitely room for improvement. This makes me linger in wait as possible future entries could turn out phenomenal.

CyberConnect2 definitely didn’t lose any of its magic, and I’m particularly eager to see what they have in store for the future. An even bigger Adventure Mode, even more playable characters including all of the Hashira can be awaiting us. Note thatHinokami Chronicleswill also add six demon characters as free DLC. With Akaza and Rui already confirmed and to be released soon.
