It’s a survival horror game focused around an engineer who finds himself alone in a spaceship and has to deal with menacing alien monsters as he struggles with his own psychosis. The original was developed by the now-defunct studio Visceral Games, back when it was spearheaded by Glen Schofield.

It spawned two sequels, Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3. The studio then began focusing on aStar Warsproject codenamed Ragtag, which was helmed by formerUncharteddirector Amy Hennig. It was set to be a single-player open-world game that revolved around a group of smugglers, however, it was canceled in 2017 and the studio was subsequently shut down by its parent company,EA.

Some industry analysts speculated that this was due to EA heads feeling doubtful about the future of big-budget single-player games. If such was the case, it would appear that that tune changed, this Dead Space remake being a clear example of that. A Group GM at EA, Samantha Ryan, recently expressed the importanceof letting studios due what they’re passionate about and referenced the Dead Space remake as one of these passion projects. The remake is being developed by EA Motive, who is in the pre-production stage foranothersingle-player game, therecently announced Iron Man project.

Dead Space is set to release in January 2023, just one month after another relevant space-horror game,The Callisto Protocol. The latter is being made by Striking Distance Studios, a team founded by the previously mentioned Glen Schofield, and the game is set to release June 09, 2025. Given the similarity in setting and gameplay, many see it as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, and thus the games may end up fighting for fans' attention.

Schofield is seemingly insistent on having Callisto reach its release date and come out before Dead Space, ashe recently expressedhis team was working 12-15 hour work days, 6-7 days a week.

Dead Space will launch on June 13, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
