One of the most popular monstrous species inDungeons & Dragonshas received a huge mechanical change in the upcoming 2025 Monster Manual, one that should shape how they play in future iterations.
TheKobold specieswas once considered fodder: red goblins that adventuring parties used to carve their way through. It was around the 3e era that Kobolds became tied to dragons and sorcery, making them a favorite of players who wanted characters who were a bit different from the norm.

Kobolds have been playable for a while, most recently in the 5e bookMordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. They’re about to receive a huge change, as a new video on the Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel has confirmed Kobolds are changing type.

Kobolds Are Finally Dragons In D&D
Kobolds are nowclassed as Dragonsin D&D, where most of the other playable species are considered Humanoid. Even Dragonborn, the humanoid dragon people, don’t have this distinction.
So, what does this mean exactly? Now that Kobolds are Dragons, anyspells targeting a Humanoidcreature won’t affect them.

These Humanoid-hitting spells include common threats, like Charm Person, Calm Emotions, Dominate Person, and Hold Person. Also, if a Necromancer kills a Kobold, they can’t be brought back as a Skeleton or a Zombie, as Animate Dead only works on Humanoids.

Kobolds being Dragons is currently an exclusive change in theupcoming Monster Manual, which launches on February 18. The change will almost certainly be applied to any future playable version of the Kobold that appears in a new book.
Players who think having Dragon-type Kobolds is too powerful or breaks the lore can still keep using the old one. After all, the current iteration of the 5e rules is fully backward compatible with the 2014 rules.
Those who want to use new and powerful Kobolds will have to wait until they appear in a new book or just hope the DM lets them apply the Dragon type to the one from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.
