Yesterday morning,CD Projekt Redreleased a surprise update forCyberpunk 2077. Patch 2.11 addressed a long list of bug fixes in relation to quests, gameplay, visuals, and more. But what really took players by surprise was the addition of a brand-new feature allowing players to change the coloring of select vehicles.

The official patch notes state that update 2.11 has “added the CrystalCoat feature which allows you to change vehicle paint color.” However, staying true to the game’s lore, as this technology to change vehicle color on the fly was developed by Rayfield, the feature is only available to use on Rayfield vehicles.

Riding The Subway In Cyberpunk 2077 Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up To Be

Metros are a cool vertical slice of urban life, so why does Cyberpunk 2077’s one feel so lifeless?

For the unaware, Rayfield is a fictional vehicle manufacturer in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Known for creating high-end, luxurious vehicles, Rayfield has two car models (Aerondight and Caliburn) and one aerial vehicle (Excalibur) available to purchase. This means there are, currently, only three vehicles that the paint color changer, known as CrystalCoat, can be used on. However, the patch notes do state that it is “currently” only available for Rayfield vehicles. A potential tease that this might roll out to other vehicles in the future? We’d like to think so.

Cyberpunk’s New CrystalCoat Feature Has An Immersive Attribute

You don’t need to look far to see the Cyberpunk 2077 community praising this new feature, but one player has noticed that CD Projekt Red has gone the full immersion route with CrystelCoat. Twitter user LastKnownMeal took to the platform yesterday, shortly after the update was deployed, to share their discovery, pointing out that if you damage your vehicle enough, CrystalCoat will stop working.

I’d love to see CrystalCoat make its way to other vehicles in the future, maybe in the form of a knock-off developed by other manufacturers, or possibly even through Rayfield charging a premium fee for other manufacturers to use the technology. But CD Projekt Red’s attention to detail hasn’t gone unnoticed.

While other games would simply include a vehicle color-changing feature, Cyberpunk 2077 reminds players, “Hey, this is a piece of technology, not just a car color in a game.”
