The planned multiplayer mode forVampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlineshas been detailed for the first time by one of the game’s programmers, one that would have been heavily inspired by Valve’sCounter-Strike.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines has a lot of cut content that has been found, and in some cases, restored by fans. As such, code relating to a multiplayer mode that was never finished has been known for a while.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 Delayed To Halloween Release Window

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has been pushed from the first half of 2025 to an October release window, as the game needs more polish.

Falloutcreator Tim Cain, who came onto theVampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines projectat a later date, has mentioned the cut Counter-Strike-style mode in the past, dubbing it “CounterBite”. In a new video on his YouTube channel, Cain has given a detailed breakdown of how the mode would have worked if it had shipped.

According to Cain, the multiplayer mode would have involved a team of vampires vs. ateam of human vampire huntersworking for the New Order of Leopold. The idea was that the vampires would have supernatural powers, while the humans would have better weaponry, as well some unique Disciplines of their own.

There would be nine “teams” in the game: the Camarilla (consisting of all playable clans), the New Order of Leopold, and the seven clans, allowing forvampires to fight each other. After each round, players would get money, and after each map rotation, they’d get experience points, all to spend on gear and powers.

Interestingly, the Masquerade is in effect, with humans hanging around the map, and breaking it (aka, revealing the existence of vampires), would lead to less cash and points. This concept would go on to be used by thenow defunct battle royaleVampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt many years later.

The modes included “Team Elimination,” which involves killing the other team; “Bloodhunt”, where one player has to flee from all the others; “Kine”, where the teams have to protect humans while stealing the ones guarded by the other team; and “Embrace,” where a Leopold team has to stop the vampires from turning NPCs into their own kind.

Unfortunately for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, the single-player mode barely made it out of the gate. Ironically, it wasabsolutely decimated in salesby another small game released by Valve that launched at the same time, something calledHalf-Life 2. Even CounterBite couldn’t have saved the game from the wrath of Gordon Freeman.
