We finally have confirmation that Cillian Murphyis notin28 Years Later. Not even a little bit.
When the first trailer dropped, fans thought they saw Murphy’s character Jim. But it was just this highly emaciatedinfectedplayed by Angus Neil. Okay, so that wasn’t him, but hehasto be in the movie, right?
Unfortunately, that’s just not the case.Empire’s newest issue has “word-exclusive interviews” with directorDanny Boyleand producer Andrew Macdonald. To tease the issue,Empirereleased a quote from Macdonald that clarified Murphy’s involvement.
[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.
Could Cillian Murphy Be In The Sequel?
When Macdonald says “in the trilogy,” he’s not referring to28 Days Later,28 Weeks Later, and28 Years Later. If you hadn’t heard,28 Years Laterkicks off a brand-new trilogy. The second film,28 Days Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, has already completed production and will be released in 2026.
If you want to play the Nuance Game, then it’s possible Murphy had already filmed forThe Bone Templeand that’s why Macdonald specifically said Murphy was “not in the first film,” as opposed to “not in the first two films.” In September, a UK outlet,News & Star, actually posted photos of Murphy filming for what seemed to beBone Temple.

28 Years LaterSeems Like It Will Be Great
One of the most exciting aspects of28 Years Lateris that it reunites the three creative leads behind the first film. Andrew Macdonald as producer,Alex Garlandas screenwriter, and Danny Boyle as director.
The original film was so early in all of their careers and, since then, each has gone on to do great things. Danny Boyle directed the Best Picture-winningSlumdog Millionaire. Garland has gone on to establish himself as one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of the last decade, with cult favorites likeEx Machina,Annihilation,Men, andCivilWar(with Macdonald producing all of those).
I think any movie fan has to be excited to see what this trio has in store now that they’re so much more experience than they were the first time around. The original28 Days Lateris one of the most important zombie movies ever and helped redefine the horror genre in the 21st century.
