According to Ymir, a high priest who oversees the cathedral of Manus Metyr, who gave his account of what is believed to be the major reason why the DLC was made possible within the lore of the game.
It was made possible because the Greater Will was off getting milk, leaving Marika behind to work with the fingers under Metyr’s instructions, which she should have been given by her parents.

Greater Will’s absence from the forefront gave a lot of time for many conflicts to arise, which made the DLC possible. The Erdtree was adorned with thorns in the game before, but slowly the power wore off as Erdtree blessings also began to wear off after the departure of the Greater Will.
Many gods and other creatures were left behind by Greater Will to fight for the abandoned land that took the shape of theShadow of the Erdtreeand gaveElden Ringa much-needed fresh lore and map extension.
