Over the years, fans have seen Bryan Cranston assume many roles in Hollywood. From making jokes to meth, and occasionally being on the right side of the law, he has played all kinds of characters. However, one of the most bizarre projects that the actor has been a part of is perhaps 2017’sPower Rangersfilm.

The project was severely bombed at the box office, even though it managed to break even with a worldwide gross of 142.5 million. However, when a film is being released, it is only natural for actors to speak highly of it during interviews. However, Cranston made quite an interesting comparison with the film, bringing Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy into the conversation.

Bryan Cranston Made a Comparison to Batman

Christopher Nolan’sDark Knighttrilogy is widely regarded as one of the best comic book series of all time. Every single aspect of the series was perfect, and there is no denying that the series made a cultural impact that can still be felt. With this in mind, when the series is compared with another project, it holds a lot of value.

During an interview withThe Huffington Post, Bryan Cranston was talking about hisPower Rangersfilm, and he ended up making a comparison with Nolan’s masterpiece. While many might be enraged by the idea of this, what the actor said made quite a lot of sense.

I wasn’t really high on it until I talked to the producer and read the script and talked to the director. After that I went, ‘This is different’…This is as different a reimagining as the ‘Batman’ television series as it became the ‘Batman’ movie series.

Cranston was specifically talking about how the film is going to be a lot different than thePower Rangerstelevision shows. He explained that Nolan’s films set a completely different tone for Batman’s character compared to the comics. Speaking on similar lines, he mentioned that the film and the shows are so different that they cannot even be compared with each other.

You can’t compare those two, and nor can you compare this movie version of the ‘Power Rangers’ to that television series. It’s unrecognizable for the most part. There are tenets of the folklore that you hold onto for sure, but the inspiration is different, and the sensibility of it, and the approach to the film making is completely different.

Cranston also added that, although they are inspired by the source material and have stayed close to the roots of the original works, they took creative liberties when they could.

Not So Dark Knight?

Further explaining his comparison to theDark Knighttrilogy,Bryan Cranstonjustified that hisPower Rangersfilm and Christopher Nolan’s work were very different. He mentioned that although his film does take a more mature approach compared to the show, it is not even close to as dark as the Batman films are.

The reason for this was that all of the lead characters in the 2017 work were teenagers. Considering the theme and the fact that a children’s television show was being adapted, there was only so much darkness they could do. However, they decided to make their film mature in a different way.

I don’t know if the tone is as dark as [“The Dark Knight”] because you’re dealing with teenagers. So the appropriateness of that, and real teenage life, and going through high school and the cliques and the popularity or lack thereof, and the bullies and all the different sections and sub-sections of high school life, and the insecurities of these kids and things like that — hopes and dreams — and you embrace all of that into a retelling of the ‘Power Rangers.’ And what you would get is this new version, this new reimagined version.

They dealt with themes of adolescence and the troubles that teens go through. While this may not seem to be much too daring, nothing similar was seen in thePower Rangersshows. Although the film did not do very well, the effort put into making the project stand out on its own is certainly impressive.

Power Rangersis available for streaming on Prime Video.
