The remake of the 1994 movie,The Crowstarring Bill Skarsgård is garnering major attention. While there’s still time for the movie to arrive on the big screen, original film director, Alex Proyas has recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming reboot which is far from positive.
The filmmaker is quite against the idea of his movie getting a remake to keep it away from tainting Brandon Lee’s legacy.

Based on the limited comic book series by James O’Barr,The Crowis intended to be a remake and reboot of the iconic 1994 film of the same name.
With the trailer already announced for the new project, fans are having second thoughts aboutBill Skarsgård’s role as Eric Draven / The Crow. This led Alex Proyas, director of the 1994 film, to express his concerns regarding the reboot.

Concerning the negative feedbackthe new reboot received online, he wrote in a post on Facebook viaThe Hollywood Reporter,
“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes.”
He is against the idea of the original movie’s remake/reboot as that was Brandon Lee’s final project who died in an on-set accident. He added,
“[‘The Crow’] is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”

His post also linked an article discussing the negative response from fans garnered in the new movie’s trailer. However, this is not the first time he has disapproved of a remake of Brandon Lee’s movie. As for Rupert Sanders, who has helmed the new movie, he considers it a tribute of sorts to Lee’s memory.
Rupert Sanders Hoped Bill Skarsgård’s Movie Could Pay Homage to Brandon Lee
In an interview withVanity Fair, Sanders expressed his opinion on his new directorial, hoping that it could serve as a tribute to the late actor, who died at the age of 28.
He shared,
“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film.”

Rupert Sanderscontinued,
“Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”
The son of Bruce Lee faced a fatal incident when a prop gun was fired at him by his co-star, Michael Massee, during production on June 20, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he later died in surgery.
Apart from Skarsgård, the cast includes FKA Twigs playing Draven’s fiancée, Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. Lionsgate’sThe Crowwill be released on Aug 02, 2025.
