Balthazar isn’t the most difficult boss inBaldur’s Gate 3, but he can be formidable enough to cause a headache for some parties. However, a new polymorph bug has been discovered that might just expedite the process of defeating the undead necromancer.

Players will encounter Balthazar while searching for the Nightsong towards the end of the second act. Balthazar has an army of minions at his disposal, but using the power of polymorph, you may turn the entire encounter into a comical sequence. As spotted by Reddit useru/mist1e, the spellpolymorph’s interaction with Balthazar is currently bugged.

However, this trick works only the first time you encounter Balthazar inThe Gauntlet of Shar. Here, the player uses polymorph to turn Balthazar into a sheep, but surprisingly, nobody seems to care about the necromancer’s new woolly shape. The player continues to take down the other enemies in the room. Usually, the effect of polymorph wears off after four moves, but the move counters not changing piqued the player’s curiosity, so they decided to see how far they could go with sheep Balthazar.

As it turns out, Balthazar remains in his sheep form throughout cutscenes as well. However, the player’s amusement at the sight is short-lived, as Balthazar returns to his original state right before the climactic Nightsong dialogue. The player goes on to hypothesise what the root cause of the bug is. Balthazar’s minions not turning hostile and the countdown not changing further suggests that the sequencing is completely bugged.
