Get Ready For A Detailed Japan

In a recent interview withFamitsu, Assassin’s Creed Shadows' producer Karl Onnee, who has worked on Immortals: Fenyx Rising and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, discussed the upcoming game’s Japan setting, as well as how the team decided on that particular era. “I chose this period because it is a very rich period in history,” said Onnee before continuing to discuss how it was such an important time for Japan in terms of war and politics. “Together, these elements provided an excellent canvas on which to write the story.”

Onnee also touched upon how Shadows' is the perfect setting for an Assassin and that it “fits perfectly into the DNA” of what people would conjure up that image to be. " We wanted to push stealth even further." said Onnee “We started this journey with Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, but we wanted to take it further with new features. Systems like light and shadow, grappling hooks, crawling, and the various tools you can acquire in the game all add to the experience.”

Talking about the Viking theme inAssassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Onnee believes that the Shinobi will be just as comparable to the Viking fantasy surrounding Eivor and also that a Shinobi fits the franchise’s brand just as well. “I feel that this is a powerful motif that can compete with “Vikings”.” states Onnee. Moving onto how they created the environments of Japan, Onnee said that he believes they have the right technology to capture different elements of light within the game and this allowed the team to be a lot more creative than usual.

“It is now possible to express not only light and shadow but also the dynamism of nature in more detail. It’s natural that the story is set in Japan, but no previous work in the series has dealt with so many trees, or in other words, so much data.” Onnee continues, “Also, because of seasonal changes, we needed more data to seamlessly run various things at the same time. Our latest technology allows us to realize our vision and continues our ambition for this game and Assassin’s Creed.”
