George R.R. Martin has previously spoken about how much he liked Frank Herbert’sDuneseries, and as readers, it’s easy to see its parallels withA Song of Ice and Fire. Denis Villeneuve has wonderfully adapted the former to the screen and has expressed a strong commitment to finishing the project he started in 2021.

If only Martin had the same will to wrap up his upcoming sixth novel, which has been in the dark chamber for over a decade now, then fans wouldn’t be left hanging in uncertainty, especially after the anticlimactic season finale ofGame of Thrones.
Denis Villeneuve acknowledged his responsibility to finish theDunefilm series
After the immense success of theDunesequel—which was also nominated for five categories, including Best Picture, at the Academy Awards—directorDenis Villeneuvewas inspired to return to Arrakis sooner than expected.
While there’s so much anticipation forDune: Messiah, the Canadian filmmaker initially planned to venture into other film projects and creative pursuits before working on the third installment. However, he had a change of heart after realizing his responsibility to finish what he started.

“I was expecting to do something else before,” he said during a press conference at the Saturn Awards viaCollider. “I was really moved by the way Part Two was received by cinephiles around the world, and I felt an appetite and a desire to see more and a responsibility to finish that story,” he noted. Over the summer break, Villeneuve revealed the images of a brokenhearted Chani and the beginning of the Holy War kept crossing his mind, suggesting his interest in the franchise remains intact.
Dune: Prophecy’s Hideous Writing Makes Its Most Powerful Character Appear Mind-numbingly Weak
Villeneuve has confirmed thatDune 3will be his last work on the film series, although he also plans to keep the door open for other filmmakers to take over and carry the franchise. Even though he’s ready to move on from the sci-fi series he’s worked on for so long, he doesn’t leave his audience hanging. He’s grateful for the support, and that’s what inspires him to get back to it as soon as possible.
We’re hoping thatGeorge R.R. Martincould hear Villeneuve’s words. It’s been a really long time since we got a proper update on the progress ofThe Winds of Winter.

George R.R. Martin should take inspiration from Denis Villeneuve
The last time Martin gave fans a concrete update on his novel was back in September last year, although it wasn’t as hopeful as we all expected. He wrote on his personal site,Not a Blog, that “writing came hard, and though I did produce some new pages… I would have liked to turn out a lot more.”
We Won’t Forgive George R.R. Martin if ‘Winds of Winter’ Will Undo the Best Revenge Story from Game of Thrones That Soothed Our Hearts
He didmentionThe Winds of Winterin his recent entries, but he did not talk about any development whatsoever. Many have been dreading he might never finish it, but if only he could take Villeneuve’s words for motivation, it might do wonders for his writing progress.
Dune Part One and Twoare available to watch on Max.
