Hard at work getting theOkamisequel up and running, Hideki Kamiya has been enjoying his renewed connections toCapcom. After building a bridge like this, Kamiya had some thoughts about other potential new projects. Among them: a remake to another of his classic titles.

More than 20 years old, the original release ofDevil May Cryis certainly old enough - and beloved enough - to earn the remake treatment. And based onrecent statements madeon his Youtube channel, Kamiya would love to take the reigns of a project like that.

Dante, From Devil May Cry 3

“I usually don’t replay my own games after release," Kamiya remarks, “and Devil May Cry is no exception. But once in a while, I catch gameplay clips and think, ‘yeah, this really does feel like a 24-year-old game design.”

The original Devil May Cry has been showing some gray hair as of late. And while that’s absolutely within Dante’s style, he could certainly stand to get with the times. With how far developers have been able to take game design in the past two decades, a game like this could certainly stand to see some improvements.

For the moment, Kamiya doesn’t know exactly what new features we’d see in a possible remake. “I don’t think seriously unless it’s really happening, so right now, I don’t have anything in mind,” he says. Which seems fair, given how far down the road a project like this would be.

Devil May Cry Creator Wants To Make “Interesting” Games, Not Just Recycle Old IP

VGCnoted that, despite Kamiya’s interest in Okami and DMC, and how this current sentiment also applies to Veiwtiful Joe, he’s not just interested in rehashing old IPs. His main goal is to make something “interesting” - whether that’s a whole new project or an old one with a new twist.

“But of course, if we get a project proposal that we really want to work on, and the desire to go it grows, then we’ll do an original work too.” Kamiya said onGameSpark. “So I think it’s appropriate to say we won’t close off any possibilities – in the end, it all comes down to whether or not we get a ‘wow’ feeling from it.”

11 Best References In Netflix’s Devil May Cry

How many of these references did you notice while Dante’s showing off his sick skills?

Based on what we’ve seen fromBethesdaand their remaster ofThe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, even a super-faithful remastering (one that carries overbugs from the previous game) can certainly meet the “interesting” criteria. That one is a smart mixture of modern sensibilities and old-game charm, and the success of that project may encourage studios to move in a similar direction.

With how beloved the Devil May Cry games are in the modern day, it seems that audiences would likely be on board to see a remake announced. All that remains is to convince the suits to greenlight the project - and if the Okami sequel goes well, that may be easier than it sounds.
