Whenever Hollywood needs someone to play an eccentric character, they call upon the great Mads Mikkelsen. His entire filmography is filled with some of the most bizarre and interesting characters in the film industry. While Jürgen Voller and Galen Erso are poor examples of the same, things start to get more interesting when Le Chiffre and Hannibal Lecter are brought into the conversation.

His work in NBC’sHannibalhas brought him the most attention for playing characters who don’t fit into the black-and-white mold of morality. The romanticization of cannibalism done in the film perfectly fits with Mikkelsen’s portrayal of Lecter, causing him to be cast in similar roles throughout his career.

Interestingly enough, the actor almost played the role of another romanticized villain recently. However, one cannot help but wonder if he would have been the right person for the role.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror

From Hannibal Lecter to Count Orlok—Mads Mikkelsen in a Symphony of Horror?

Nosferatuhas certainly been making some waves since its release. Following in the footsteps of the classic tale of Count Orlok and taking a step back from the beautification of vampires that the 21st century has seen, the story certainly stands alone in its portrayal of the supernatural creature.

With this, one of the more interesting pieces of information from the behind-the-scenes of the recently released project involvedBill Skarsgård’sCount Orlok. During an interview on theHappy, Sad, Confusedpodcast, the actor revealed thatRobert Eggers’soriginal vision for the film was very different than the final product that fans got.

Skarsgård revealed that he wasn’t the original choice of the film’s vampire but was supposed to play Ellen Hutter’s husband, Thomas Hutter. While this, on its own is very interesting, he also revealed that there were very different faces that almost played Orlok.

It would seem that Eggers was considering actors like Willem Defoe andMads Mikkelsenin the role of the vampire. While Defoe is certainly a great choice since he has already played the character before in 2000’sShadow of the Vampire, one cannot help but wonder if Mikkelsen would have been the right consideration in this role.

Who humanizes the devil better than Mads Mikkelsen?

The conversation surrounding the s*xual themes to Count Orlok is quite an interesting one. Robert Eggers has talked in quite a bit of detail about the undertones of the character and the fact thatNosferatudoes have a very evident love triangle at its center.

With this, it is not surprising that the director was considering someone like Mads Mikkelsen to play the role of Orlok. While those who have seenSilence of the Lambsknow of Hannibal Lecter as a ruthless but smart serial killer and cannibal, this drastically changes in the television series.

Mikkelsen is a master at portraying Lecter in an interesting but sexy light, and the fact that fans believe the series to be more romantic than crime showcases exactly why he would be a great choice for the role. Although many fans would be upset to see him in the prosthetics that Bill Skarsgård was put in for the role, he certainly would have given an excellent performance as the character.
