Spoiler Alert !!!House of the Dragon spoilers follow.
HBO Max’sHouse of the Dragoncame to a thrilling end, even though fans will now have to wait two long years in order to see the chaos unfold. Much has been made about the season’s slow pacing and the lack of character development, with fans expecting much more gore and violence, considering the war between the Targaryens had broken out at the end of Season 1.
However, instead, we got a slower, more deliberate season that expertly set things up for the future, and did enough to explain exactly why some of the major players are headed to their obvious destruction. This, includes Aemond Targaryen, who fans of the book will be well aware is heading towards his death.

Aemond became the king after his brother Aegon was burned “mysteriously” by Vhagar, and has already done enough to irk those around him, including his own mother, Alicent Hightower. Even if there are a range of factors and players who will impact where the next season goes, fans have found an unlikely source of sympathy for Aemond Targaryen, as well as his dragon, which is to date the biggest featured on the show.
Aemond Targaryen is fast running out of allies, just like Vhagar
Much can be made about the way in which Aemond has effectively run out of allies as he grows more desperate to bring an end to Rhaenyra’s revolt. As things stand, Aegon is terrified of him, while his wife, Helaena, is well aware that it was actually Aemond who almost killed her husband. Alicent Hightower is no longer on his side, while Otto Hightower’s whereabouts remain a mystery.
As things stand, the Greens have only 2 functional, war-capable dragons on their side. There is Dreamfyre, ridden by Helaena Targaryen, who has shown no interest in joining Aemond in the war, thus far. Aegon’s injuries mean that Sunfyre is also out of commission, leaving Vhagar as the sole beast capable of wreaking destruction, on Aemond’s side.

Further, even if on one hand Aemond runs out of allies, Vhagar’s size means that she spent the majority of the season perched in a field near King’s Landing, as she is simply too huge for the Dragonpit. That presents an intriguing notion, with both the dragon and its rider currently in a delicate, lonely position, as far as theHouse of the Dragonis concerned.
heart breaking when i think about how both aemond and vhagar are lonely which makes their bond so special, aemond has nobody by his side and vhagar lays alone in a field since she’s too big for the dragon pitpic.twitter.com/bUYQpR3i60

That was also pointed out by a fan on Twitter, who claimed that this shared loneliness, coupled with the obvious might the two beings boast of, makes for a poignant bond. Both Vhagar and Aemond have had to deal with multiple betrayals, and even though in the case of the latter they may be well-deserved, Vhagar has also painted a lonely picture via his appearances in Season 2.

Aemond Targaryen is headed towards obvious destruction as we await Season 3 ofHouse of the Dragon
Fans of the book will be well aware that Aemond is destined to die at the hands of Daemon Targaryen, who himself had a ridiculous journey in Season 2. Trapped in Harrenhall and dealing with a fallout with Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon sees a variety of visions of the future, that also include a certain Danaerys Targaryen.
The conclusion was that his senses returned, and he was only too willing to submit to Rhaenyra when the two went face-to-face in the Season Finale. Now, Rhaenyra not only has access to seven dragons, she has a huge army, and Corlys Velaryon’s fleet to call upon, in addition to the support of the love of her life.

While there is still plenty left to go down and Rhaenyra will eventually suffer multiple betrayals, especially from (one of) her new dragonriders, she holds all the cards, and finally appears to be willing to wreak havoc on the Greens as well. Season 3 can therefore be expected to bring about real gore, violence, and furtherance of war, and multiple memorable characters can be expected to go down quickly, like a deck of cards.
House of the Dragonis available to be streamed on Max.
